Reconnect successfully undertook a 10K race “Run for your Life” at Hyde Park on 17th September 2006 to promote awareness about refugee issues and to raise funding towards the cost of training and work placement for unemployed/ underemployed refugees. Over 300 runners participated in the race.

In commemoration of world Refugee day


The event was held at the Charity Centre/ 'Reconnect's office, as part of the European Union Capacity Building project to enable refugees' in London and the South East to broaden their engagement in global issues. The event was funded by the European Union.






The event included:

  • Speech and reflection on the importance of 'Education for Devleopment'
  • Speech by Refugee Journalists to explore the role of refugee in the British Media and the challenges and the way forward
  • Cultural show: Ethiopian folk show by refugee artists.

In commemoration of WORLD REFUGEE DAY
The event was held at the Institute of Education (IOE), attended by about 150 people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The event was funded by the European Union and the Institute of Education, University of London.





The event included:

  • Speech and reflection on the importance of 'Education for Devleopment'
  • Poems by refugee trainee teachers and a refugee community representative
  • Traditional music/ dance performances by Inti Shungu/ Ecuadorian Group and BZ Traditional Ethiopian Band.


As one of the attendees put it:

“It was wonderful hearing from and speaking to people who have had to struggle through life only to know that they have achieved their goal and are ready to teach in both the UK and abroad in developing countries, proving that there are opportunities and that with dedication you can achieve your goals.”
